Clamshell style battlesuit, incorporating the Japanese vision of a pilot folded up inside the actual battle suit, which is more of a walking machine than an actual suit of armor. Is this design a viable design for OGRE and GEV? I think so. There's a lot to cram into the 'modern' battlesuit. A battlesuit would be big with all that equipment and armor and weapons and supplies... a lot bigger than say a knight in plate mail armor was. The Japanese have refined the concept of a 'One Man Tank' to an art with their designs in their excellent Japanimation style OAVs and series. I think that personal power armor designs in OGRE and GEV would be more along these lines than of some form fitting suit of armor. There is just too much equipment for the 21st Century infantryman to carry around for the suits NOT to be huge. In my opinion, the battlesuits represented by the MI in OGRE and GEV are closer to the "GUGES-D" and the E-SWAT suits used by the Olympus E-SWAT and by Deunan in Masune Schirow's "APPLESEED" rather than the form fitting kind of suits you find in classic sci-fi literature such as E.E. "Doc" Smith's famous "LENSMAN" series, and who could forget those wonderful power suits found in Robert Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" (the book, not that ridiculous movie of the same name which had NO power armor in it...) |
