TECHNICAL DATA-The fourth stage burns over two tons of fuel per second during the three and a half minutes of operation. During this time, the Arrow IV will achieve a altitude of 54 nautical miles and a speed approaching 13,000 miles per hour. After main engine cut-off, the "Icarus" will coast for approximately ten seconds before firing explosive charges which separate the connecting ring that joins Stage Four with Stage Three. Stage Four and the connecting ring gently fall away, each losing speed to the pull of the Earth's gravity. Ten seconds after Stage Four burnout the main engines of Stage Three ignite and continue to accelerate the "Icarus" out of the atmosphere and the gravity well.
